Tulamben

Tulamben is a small village located on the north-eastern coast of Bali. It is less than 90 km away from our base, and the travel time by car is less than 2 hours. Tulamben is located 15 km from the highest volcano in Bali, Gunung Agung (3142 meters above sea level). Black lava flowed straight into the sea from the beginning of the volcano’s existence. The beach in Tulamben is covered with black stones, polished by the waves.

The water temperature on this side of the island rarely drops below 27 degrees, and for most of the year it stays at 29-30 degrees. In the Tulamben area, there are no strong currents that often hit the east and south-east coasts.

Most of the dive sites here are accessible from the shore. One of the most interesting and popular of them is the wreck of the American warship USAT Liberty, which was hit by a Japanese torpedo in 1942 while traveling from Australia to the Philippines. Damaged, she managed to reach the coast of Bali, where she landed on the beach in Tulamben. The earthquake caused by the eruption of Mount Agung in 1963 pushed the ship into the sea, sinking her. Almost 120 meters long, Liberty lies almost at the very shore.

It is a great diving site for everyone, both complete beginners and experienced. Amateurs of freediving and snorkeling are equally eager to visit this place. Minimum depth 3m, maximum 30m. It is also a great place for night dives. The wreck is overgrown with hard and soft corals, huge sea sponges of the barrel sponge type and inhabited by countless fish. We managed to meet a whale shark here a few times. Sea turtles, reef sharks, barracudas and a lot of molluscs and crustaceans often appear here.
